Stick's House

Today, I just need to vent a little bit.  Everyone knows I'm a computer geek.  I play computer games all the time.  So today's post may hit some people the wrong way, and if it does, I apologize....

The tragedy of the Columbine High School killings, has affected every one of us.  Whether you know it or not.  If you sat glued to CNN or your local news that day as I did.  You were affected.

I believe that there was something definitely wrong with those two high school boys.  Somewhere along the line, something broke down.

We all know how high school is.  Peer pressure is a huge thing.  I think now more than ever.  The average age for young people having sex is getting lower and lower.  I can remember plenty of people smoking in high school.  One of the biggest pressures of high school are the cliques.  If you aren't in with the right crowd your nobody!  And if you happen to be an outsider, you can "get it" from several cliques.

I'm just glad that I had my parents, who cared enough to notice when I was bothered by something.  Whether it be my step or biological parents.  They could read me.  They cared enough to ask.  I'm not solely blaming the parents of those two boys.  But somewhere along the line, something broke down.

Video games, music, TV, movies....don't kill people....PEOPLE kill people.

You don't have to read very far into this article to know what I'm talking about, but it's not very long to begin with: they establish that it's just an understood fact that playing these games turns people into monsters - that it (in fact) creates monsters, to use their wording. I have to say that I think that's crazy.  They make it sound like production of monsters is  some discrete, mechanical process where you sprinkle some Doom on a kid and he freaks out.

Why do bad things happen to good people? I don't know, but I'm fairly certain the reason isn't Doom. It's like these people think that being really, really sad is a suitable substitute for being right.  Why file a lawsuit hours before the statute of limitations runs out if money is "the smallest part of the goal."

Like I said above some of you may not agree with my opinion, that's ok.  Don't sue me....just send me an email and let's talk about it.

Two updates in one day....y'all must feel pretty lucky....well do ya, punk?

Anyway, Wendy & I just saw the grossest commercial ever....It's this McDonald's commercial, where everyone is asleep and they keep showing different people asleep.  Everyone they show is drooling in their sleep!  If that wasn't enough, the last guy blows a bubble with his spit!  It's so gross.  The tag line for the commercial is: Ever wonder why people drool in your sleep?

Now that I feel like a weather man....this morning at 9:30.  It was 85°, and we had 85% humidity!  I love this place!!

I briefly mentioned before about the sports here.  I'm not sure why I never mentioned the "Football Channel".  Now before some of you guys out there get too excited.  Football here is soccer!  So of course, they show soccer games almost all day long.  Most games are live, which is cool.  I think it's a UK channel.  When they're not showing soccer, they're showing news about soccer, or interviews with soccer players.  WOO HOO!  How excited am I?  Let me tell you, not that excited.  What I wouldn't do to have a NBA channel, or a NHL channel.

Yes, we get ESPN here, but for me to see a hockey game, I have to wake up at about 6:30 in the morning, and then I miss the 3rd period, because I have to go to work!  They do show some NBA games, only select games though.  I need a LAKERS channel.  I would love to be able to listen to the games live.  But last time I checked you had to pay for it at NBA.com.

I've been playing this new computer game, Black & White, it's a pretty cool game.  You play "god" and your main goal is to get all the villagers to worship you.  You are give a creature who can help do your bidding.  It's fun, but very difficult to stay good or bad.  (hence the name Black & White)  Right now, I'm mostly good, sometimes you have to do something bad, or powerful to get villagers to believe in you.  One of the best things about the game is that you can be a good "god" and have an evil creature, or vice versa.  It's very cool.  Here's a review of the game if you're interested.

Today, it rained almost all day....but still managed to stay around 85°!

We just got back from Wendy's Birthday gathering @ BREWERKZ.  That place is pretty cool.  They brew their own beer, I can definitely recommend the Oatmeal Stout.  They also have pretty good food!

I did take some pictures, and I'll let you know when they're up.  (probably Monday or Tuesday)

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire hit Singapore last night.  The host of the show, "the Flying Dutchman", is a local radio show host.  (I think it's a classical radio station.)  ummmm, he's no REGIS.  I'm sure it will take a bit for the guy to find his own rhythm, but right now the show is pretty bad.  Maybe I'm just used to Regis' way of doing things.

I'd thought about calling in for the US show, when we were still in the states, but never did.  Now with only 3.5 million people in Singapore, my chances may be better.  But....I'm sure you have to live here and not be an ex-pat.  I'll have to look into the rules.

We went to Borders tonight and since I've been comparing Singapore to Orange County in terms of size, I thought I'd look up some stats in an Almanac.  I found out that Orange County is 3 times the size of Singapore!!  Singapore is 250 square miles and Orange County is 790 square miles.

Looking for some of the older news?  Check the Archives part of the menu bar above (it's under about us) and choose the month you're looking for.  I'll try to keep a months worth of posts up on this, the "home" page.

Hello, it's Wendy again.  Well, another adventurous day in Singapore.

You know how there's those things in life you take for granted, but you don't realize how difficult your life becomes when this particular thing is tampered with?

Yep...weights, measures & degrees.

Something as simple as baking brownies can suddenly become a total disaster!  Cajun brownies aren't a very popular dish in any country!  Have you ever been to the super market to buy lunch meat, cheese or ground beef?  Sounds pretty easy right?  Wrong!  Especially if you don't know how much you're asking for.  100 grams of sliced turkey is a lot different than 100 kilograms of sliced turkey! One could be a few slices, while the other can be a few turkeys!  I finally had to go to the American Club and get a chart that now proudly hangs on our fridge.  We can't even tell you how hot it is outside using Celsius.  My electric oven and the Air-con (as they call it here) all use Celsius.  At first I just baked everything at the same temperature by putting the dial somewhere in the middle.  It worked at first, it just took a long time for anything to cook.  Something you never think of like how to set you oven or how to purchase food, changes a lot when you move to the other side of the planet.

Happy Easter to Everyone!

I have to rant about something....and it's nothing really that big either....
Both Wendy & I have now felt the repercussions of NAPSTER.  Hey, I'll admit it, I've downloaded music from Napster, (not Metallica though!) but now what it has done to the record industry and the way radio stations are now restricting there audio over the internet.  Wendy & I both listen to radio stations that used to stream live audio from home.  I would listen to sports talk shows, alternative stations or STAR 98.7 and Wendy would listen to country stations.  Well....as of last week we can't get these stations, because of the following message:

Due to continuing uncertainty over rights issues related to the streaming of
radio broadcast programming over the Internet, including issues regarding
demands for additional fees for the streaming of recorded music and radio
commercials, we and our advertisers are forced to temporarily disable our
streaming. We apologize for the inconvenience of this interruption. We are
working with both our advertisers and the Recording Industry Association of
America to find a solution to those problems as quickly as possible so that
we can resume our streaming.

Can you believe that?  Didn't the record industry have a huge cow, when cassettes came out too?  Hopefully this will blow over just like cassettes did?  Any comments?  Email me....

The office was closed yesterday.  It's weird to be off of work for religious holidays.  I think there are 12 public holidays here and 7 of them are religious, for either Christians, Hindu, or Buddhists.

As I mentioned yesterday, we're planning a trip to Tioman.  While looking at places to stay and dive.  We've found so many other places to visit.  Cambodia, Thailand, Bali, parts of Indonesia & Malaysia, and of course Australia.  Hopefully we ca make the best of our stay here in Asia!  I may have to ask for a bigger raise, if we end up traveling the way we want to!

Still snorkeling in the pool....I don't know what I'm gonna do once we actually hit the water and I get to see more than blue & white tiles! J
We're planning to go to an Tioman soon, to go snorkeling.  It's an island in Malaysia.  We can stay for 3 days and 2 nights for around $50.  Pretty cool....I honestly can't wait.  Soon we'll be going to SCUBA classes and then getting our equipment?  Any one want to give us some advice about buying gear?

I almost forgot that today is Friday the 13th!  It's not a big deal over here, not even mentioned, except for with Westerners.

Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 11:47 PM

There's a new show on TV here in S'pore....Anita: Speak of the Diva.  They've been hyping this show for months....and it's pretty bad.  I guess Anita was/is a pretty big thing here in Singapore. (don't ask me why!)  Her show is like a bunch of US shows rolled into one.  It's a talk show, she interviews local stars, etc.  The audience also has the chance to interview Anita, at times. And....she sings (this is what she's popular for.)  She has a decent voice too.  But it doesn't seem like she has any of her own material.  She's always singing someone else's songs.  I guess she was in Vegas for several years.  But this show just isn't working for us.
Sorry Anita!

Hello?....Is this thing on??

Sorry for the lack of posts, as well as the downed website.  As I wrote a while back, Tripod accidentially deleted several hundred user web sites!  So both my Tripod site are still around, for now....I think I'll stay where I am.

So much has happened since my last post, (2 weeks ago!) sooooo, I'll try to update daily to catch up.
